The modular machine platform for hardening steel regardless of workpiece
Modules form the basis of the new machine concept for vertical hardening applications. As a provider of special applications, SMS Elotherm has succeeded with ELO-X in designing a machine platform for process and solution-oriented configurations. The modular concept allows the hardening plant to be combined largely regardless of the workpiece, with all the variations necessary for individual customer requests and specifications. For you, that means an efficient and thus effective production or testing plant.
For questions about technical feasibility and for optimum hardening results, SMS Elotherm's Process and Calculation Engineers are always on hand with their expertise.
SMS Elotherm's technical centre has two highly flexible induction hardening machines for vertical and horizontal hardening tasks. Thermographic photos of the heating process taken with a thermal imaging camera, and extensive process optimisation are also on offer, as are full workpiece evaluation according to hardness specification and the associated documentation.
SMS's own inductor production allows rapid optimisation of inductors. By combining modern technology and our decades of experience, we can support you as a reliable and innovative partner in process development.

THE MODULES
The ELO-X machinery modules can be combined in many different plant configurations. When setting up a system, the chosen front module and the associated number of stations, process positions, workpiece fixtures, etc. determine the possible combinations for the machine configuration. Each module is available in several versions that can be combined to provide specific machine functions. There are additional, adaptable function modules for internal workpiece transport as well as for feed and draw-off conveyors.
Defined interfaces ensure compatibility and enable a large number of variations in applications. Ergonomic and intuitive operation completes the concept. The mobile operating terminal includes the operating panel for all plant functions and the energy PC for process monitoring.
Basic module

The basic module lies at the heart of the precision afforded to each hardening task. The basic frame provides stability and stiffness and contains the medium frequency equipment and the NC axes for the hardening task (up to four in number).
Front module

The front module is configured according to the requirements specific to the workpiece and the process. Variations range from simple manual loading to twin and indexing table solutions. The range is completed by the fully-automatic manufacturing cell, integration into a manufacturing line and linkage to a robot application.
Tank module

The compact and easily accessible tank module serves for monitoring and distribution of media. This module is individually adapted to the process.
Media module

The central media supply unit with the cooling circuits for quenching medium, electrics and control cabinet are located on a separate frame. The location of the module can thus be individually determined from customer requests and local circumstances.
Power module

Inverter technology – the compact, modular design permits rapid exchange of components and helps to reduce downtimes. The use of silicon carbide transistors brings the power electronics up to the latest standard.

The basic version of the ELO-X includes a CNC system of make Siemens 840D SL with OP012/OP015 and a machine control board in a separate operating panel.
As an option, the ELO-X range can be fitted with an energy PC for quality monitoring of process parameters. The ELO-X process sensors are in all cases integrated by means of IO links (bidirectional digital communication). This advanced, Fourth Industrial Revolution technology offers the operator many advantages in the area of sensor systems, e.g. Plug & Play, status data, secure device identification, anti-tampering security, etc.
